More on Hypnobirthing: Why is it so successful? Science and Statistics:

SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

There is a wealth of scientific evidence to show how incredibly strong the body/mind continuum is, specifically when it comes to feelings and emotions resulting in physiological changes. If a mother is feeling anxious, fearful or stressed, her body will be reacting from the Sympathetic Nervous System. This system produces adrenaline, (the fight/flight hormone), and the stress hormone catecholamine.

In labour, the mother’s body does not choose fight/flight but freeze. Since the uterus is not needed in the flight or fight state, blood is directed away from the uterus and into the extremities, restricting the flow of blood and oxygen to the uterus. This results in the vertical muscles in the Uterus (in the first stages of labour) having to work much harder to pull upwards and to draw the crossing lateral muscles back.

The result: the cervix then will remain taut and closed; either slowing or completely stoping labour.

Ultimately, being in the Sympathetic Nervous Systen can cause pain and extend the duration of labour.

Vs

PARA SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system keeps the body functioning in a state of calm, slowing the heart rate and generally keeping us in a state of well being. The parasympathetic system produces oxytocin (hormone of love).

Oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions in labour, allowing, in the up stages of labour, the vertical muscles to pull upwards whilst the lateral muscles are relaxed. This process thins the cervix, allowing the baby to move more easily towards its delivery into the world.

Oxytocin also helps with bonding and provides natural euphoria.

Furthermore Endorphins are released, (often noted to be stronger than the strongest artificial pain killer, Morphine), which allows the muscles of the uterus to relax and open whilst also providing natural pain relief.

Our Mind & Body Hypnobirthing Course will help to keep both you and your partner in the Parasympathetic Nervous System state, resulting in a calm and relaxed birthing experience for you and your baby.

This YouTube video shows BBC’s Dr. Michael Mosley demonstrating how successful hypnosis can be in reducing pain, the use of hypnosis in birthing significantly reduces pain in labour. Hypnobirthing aims to uses the mind to seize control of the birthing process through hypnosis.
